Carlo Acutis

Carlo Acutis, who was born May 3, 1991, in Milan Italy, loved many things but most of all he loved the Eucharist. He enjoyed spending time with Jesus. When his parents would take him out to Milan on the streets every church he saw he asked to go in. His mom, Antonia Acutis, said she didn't realize how many churches there were until Carlo asked to go to every one. When Carlo went into the church, he genuflected and spent a few moments in prayer and then was ready to leave. Carlo’s love for the Eucharist would only grow.

Carlo lived a very ordinary life. He enjoyed playing soccer with his friends. Even though he loved video games, he intentionally limited his playing time. He wanted to be the master of video games and he didn't want them to control him. So he limited himself to one hour per week, which he usually played on the weekends. Carlo also taught religious ed to a younger class. Although he was discouraged by his students' misunderstanding of the sacredness of adoration, he continued to be an example of love for the eucharist.

Carlo had many friends who liked to talk with him because of his kindness. He went out of his way to say hello to janitors and kids who looked lonely. Many homeless people on the busy streets of Milan were treated with kindness by Carlo. He wanted to help, so he always asked to bring the homeless some leftovers. He used his allowance to buy sleeping bags for his new friends, the homeless.

Despite coming from a wealthy family, he treated his servants like friends which made them wonder why Carlo was so kind. He respectfully thanked his cook for dinner and his servant Rashish. Rashish was one of Carlos' good friends. Even though he was Hindu Rashish often went to mass with Carlo. Carlo liked to do little things to help him out. He made his bed and kept his room tidy. Rashish later went on to convert to Catholicism because of Carlos' influence.

Not only was Carlo busy helping the poor and people who needed a friend, he avidly constructed his Eucharistic Miracles Exhibit. He traveled to the sites where Eucharisic miracles took place to photograph and document them. He wanted his exhibit to be like a car exhibit with posters defining every aspect of each Eucharistic Miracle. For weeks, he worked on these posters to transform them into a website. He spent late nights coding on his computer. Finally his work was done, he had finished his exhibit and his church was going to let him show his Eurcharistic display to the parish. Soon after he finished, he felt too weak to get out of bed. His parents rushed him to the hospital where he was diagnosed with aggressive leukemia and was given only a few days to live. This did not stop Carlo’s faith. He calmly stated to his mother, “Mom, don't be afraid. Since Jesus became a man, death has become the passage towards life, and we don't need to flee it. Let us prepare ourselves to experience something extraordinary in eternal life.” While Carlo was sick in bed his friend rushed to get the exhibit ready for his church and it was a success. As Carlo’s health worsened he refused pain meds and offered his sufferings for the pope and the church. On October 11, 2006, he fell into a coma, and passed away the next morning on October 12. His legacy remained. The Eucharistic Miracles exhibit went around the world and educated many. I personally was able to visit the display in two places: Lititz, Pennsylvania and Bloomingdale, Ohio. His death spread through Milan like a wildfire and there were so many people at his funeral his parents were amazed. Carlo Acutis was beatified on October 10, 2020, and became a saint on September 7, 2025. He is the patron Saint of the internet.

I really look up to Carlo Acutis because he was one of the first people to use technology for evangelization. He also shows me a good example of self control by only playing a little bit of video games. By being kind to so many people, Carlo's life is a reminder to be kind to everyone. I relate with Carlo because I really like computer programming, making websites, and playing soccer. I chose Carlo to be my Confirmation Saint because he is a very good role model with modern technology and kindness towards others.
